Wisdom of Saint John Fisher

As we celebrate Saint Romuald and prepare for Holy Lent (and for those already doing Exodus 90!):

"Be a friend to yourself: offer these sufferings for your own soul, whether they be prayers, almsdeeds, or any other penitential suffering. If you will not effectively and with a generous heart do these things for your own soul, do not expect that others will do them for you, and in doing them for yourself, they shall be more profitable to you by a thousandfold than if they were done for you by any other."

--Saint John Fisher, Bishop and Martyr, writing to his sister Elizabeth Fisher from his cell in the Tower of London, in the work A Spiritual Consolation, c. 1535.
